Stockfleths Lille Grensen

The business began in 1895 as Den Danske Kaffeforretning, and took the Stockfleths name in the 1930s in honour of Astri Stockfleth, who ran it from 1913 and built it into the city's leading coffee and tea merchant between the wars. It moved to the Lille Grensen arcade in the 1970s and has been there since, which makes this the oldest coffee house in Oslo still trading.
The part that matters for anyone tracing the modern scene: Tim Wendelboe started behind this counter in 1998 at nineteen, and was running quality control, training and espresso roasting here by the time he won the World Barista Championship in 2004. Stockfleths baristas have kept turning up at national and world finals since. Eleven shops across the city now, and this is the one to stand in.
