Ogawa Coffee

The Ogawa Coffee storefront on Milk Street, its tree branch window decals and hanging pendant lights visible through the glass

Ogawa traces back to 1952, when Hidetsugu Ogawa started an independent roasting business in Kyoto that grew into one of Japan's largest coffee wholesalers. This Downtown Crossing shop, which opened in 2015, was the company's first cafe outside Japan, chosen for Boston in part because the city's mix of history and a large student population reminded the company of Kyoto itself.

The menu keeps a Kyoto style hospitality at its center: espresso and pour over sit alongside hojicha lattes and Japanese pastries, served in a bright room with tall windows and stadium style seating built for sitting with a laptop for a while. It remains the only Ogawa Coffee location in the United States.
